Straub takes out Autumn Festival crit

On a perfect autumn day in Armidale, Geoff Straub rode a brilliant race to win the A grade Autumn Festival criterium for 2008.

While all eyes were on the pre-race favourite Peter McDonald (Drapac-Porsche), Straub attacked almost from the beginning, building a handy lead on the field. McDonald and Matt Conelly (Port Macquarie) then bridged the gap and the trio worked together to consolidate their lead over the main bunch.

As the race approached it’s conclusion the breakaway group lapped the main bunch, and McDonald attacked, threatening to power away for the victory. But Straub and Conelly worked with other riders from the strong Port Macquarie squad to reel him in, setting up the race for a thrilling sprint finish on the last lap.

As the riders came around the corner into the finishing straight the crowd let out a mighty roar at the sight of Straub in the lead with McDonald gaining fast. But the gap was too large and Straub held on to win by several bike lengths from McDonald with Conelly in third place.

While these three dominated the race, under 17 ride Ethan Kimmence (Inverell) beat the rest of the bunch home to take fourth place.

The home town win is a great result for Geoff, and will give him the confidence to build some solid results over the coming road racing season.
