Round 1 to the young generation

The first race of the Club Championships was held on Long Swamp Road on Saturday 10 May. The popularity of the course saw a big turnout, with everyone keen to tackle two full laps so they could ride both of the big hills twice.

Young riders were successful in taking out all three races, with Mitch Sozou winning A grade, Reece O’Hara B grade, and Jillian Backhouse C grade.

Mitch broke away from the A grade pack with Geoff Straub and they stayed away to come home in first and second places. Andrew Kirk beat the rest home to take third place from Dave Munday and Pat McMillan.

In B grade Reece attacked on the hill at the end of the first lap reducing the leading bunch to a group including Simon Paul, Kenny McDonald, Wilfried Keller and Bruce Buxton. Then on the state forest hill Wilfried and Bruce dropped off leaving three leaders. Simon led the way to the finish line, but Reece had too much speed to take the final sprint. Kenny rode well for third place, with Wilfried in fourth and Bruce in fifth.

Jillian dominated C grade, riding strongly to take first place from Lasse Mikkelsen, Geoff Allen and Cody Burton.

A tally of the point scores will be kept on the club championship page.
